Letter Fluency

Now that we have mastered our letter names - we are going to be building our reading fluency to help our reading skills.  

In your child's green folder you will find a letter name fluency sheet.  This sheet does not need to be turned in at the end of the week.

End of Quarter 1

We will be finishing Quarter ONE on October 23.

1st - 5th Grade students will be receiving a report card that can be viewed on Power School. In Kindergarten we complete report cards at the end of Semester 1 and at the end of the year.

Your child's weekly progress report gives you an idea of where they are academically.

PIcture Retakes

 

Photo retakes are October 19 - if your child will need retakes or have their picture taken add that date to your calendar.

* If you are doing retakes, please return the original photo package to school with your child on that day. These will be the first thing in the morning! *

Discipleship Practice - October

 

Students will practice discernment by seeking God’s wisdom and direction in all areas of life.

• asking good academic questions
• showing curiosity
• showing a desire to dig deeper
• pausing to seek a wise choice
• using what they know to make a good decision
• seeking out help in a hard situation (wisdom from a trusted person God has put in their life)

Rose Park is HIRING!!

 

We are looking for a caring, dependable person to join our after-school care team! This part-time or full-time position offers hours from 3:00–5:30 p.m. at $17/hour and could be a great opportunity for a parent, retiree, or anyone looking for a few afternoon hours working with children in a school setting. Responsibilities include supervising and caring for students, helping with fun and engaging activities, building positive relationships with children, creating a safe and welcoming environment, and supporting students throughout their afternoon. You don’t need to be a teacher to be a great fit! We’re looking for someone who is responsible, patient, caring, and enjoys spending time with children. If you or someone you know would be a great fit, we would love to hear from you!

Cold and Flu Season is HERE

 

Cold and Flu Season is here!

Here are some helpful reminders for you to help keep your Kindergartener and other friends healthy:

* Your Kindergartener needs to be FEVER & SYMPTOM  free for at least 24 hrs. before they return to school and show no additional symptoms of COVID or the Flu.
* If your Kindergartener is running a FEVER - please keep them home.
* If your Kindergartener is having any of the following symptoms please keep them home:

Vomiting
Diarrhea
Fever (over 100.3)
Extreme fatigue and chills
Loss of taste and/or smell

* Your Kindergartener needs to be free of these symptoms for at least 24 hrs.
* My rule of thumb is, you know your child the best - if you feel that they are off, please keep them home.

If your Kindergartener will not be at school please call or email the office (820.4055) (rp@hollandchristian.org).

Grandparent's Day

 

We are excited to welcome Grandparents and Grandfriends to Rose Park on the morning of October 1st (see schedule in the image above). We plan to have some treats available for Grandparents to enjoy in the library - if you would be willing to volunteer or provide treats please take a look at the sign up genius!

Fall Parent Teacher Conferences

Conferences will be held on October 8 and 10 this year.  Due to a smaller class this year,  I will only be holding conferences on the 8th.  

If your family can not make this date work please reach out to me and we can schedule to get together on the 10th during conference hours.

Scheduling conferences will be done through Virtual Paragon. You will be receiving directions to register once it has been open to families.  Conferences will only be 10 min and we will be going over your students Social Emotional skills during this time.  Academic skills are in the weekly progress report.  If you have questions or concerns about academic skills please reach out prior to conferences so we can connect. 

Science Unit #1 - Discovering My 5 Senses

 

MAP Testing

This week we will be taking our first MAP (measurement of academic progress) testing in both Reading and Math.
This is a standard test that is used as one of the many tools that help us measure your kindergarteners growth. We will be doing this assessment again in the Winter and then again in the Spring.  You will be able to view your students results at the end of Kindergarten.

Library

 

Every Monday we will be heading to our school library as part of our Reading Workshop.  Students will hear stories and be able to borrow 2 "good fit" books.  These books will be sent home that day and need to be returned the following Monday.  

I have a special bin for returned books that your student will be able to put them once they are returned.

Community Event

 

Ranch Hands Needed:

We’d love to have a few additional families join our Ranch Hands team to help care for the goats and chickens on the weekends. 

Families typically claim one weekend at a time, making it an easy way to pitch in and care for our Ranch animals. If this is something your family would be willing to do, please let Ms. Roskamp know! We’re happy to train you and get you started!

Small Toys/Treasure Needed!!

Do you have small Happy Meal or Birthday Bag toys that you no longer need or want?

If you said "YES" - I would love to recycle them for you.

Every Friday our class gets to trade in their pompoms for rewards. PomPom's are earned when SER behavior is shown in the classroom and they are bucket fillers. I would love to add these treasures to our store!

You can bring them to school at any time.

Book Bags

 

Book Bags Coming Home on FRIDAY!

On Friday, your student will be taking home their book bag with "Good Fit" books for them to discover and practice with you at home.  I encourage you to read these books every night if possible.  Here is an example of a good practice to build confidence and skills with their books:

Day 1: You read it to them.

Day 2: You read a page and have them point to the words and repeat the page.  Tracking the words is an important piece to practice at the beginning of their reading journey.  

Day 3: You both read at the same time.

Day 4: They read.  If it is tricky for them go back to Day 2 until they feel more confident.

Day 5+: They read.  You can ask them questions at the end of the book to see if they recall what was read.

REMEMBER it is okay to keep rereading the story.  This helps their reading muscles and builds stamina as a reader.

Reading Fluency + Comprehension = a strong reader!!!

September Reading Workshop

In our first unit we will be "Blasting Off" into Reading Workshop.  Kindergarteners will be introduced to Reading Workshop and establish the routines and expectations of reading workshop.  They will be building their independent reading stamina and learning how to use their book boxes during this time.  By building a firm foundation we will be able to continue to grow deeper as readers through out the year.

Walk A Thon

WHEN: September 23

WHERE: Holland Christian High School Football Field

TIME: 1-2 PM

We are excited to participate in Holland Christian's Annual Walk A Thon event. This is a great opportunity for our PreK-5th grade students to get outside to walk, run, skip, or hop around for 45 minutes to raise funds for our classrooms and/or building.

Walk-A-Thon envelopes will come home in your children's folder this week. Please make sure that you return the envelope with your raised funds in your child's folder.

Walk-A-Thon is our only elementary fundraiser for the school year.

We are able to fund our Rose Park Ranch, Playscape, and other initiatives throughout the year for our children thanks to the funds raised through this event!

Your student will be receiving a T-Shirt for this event.

Kindergarten Bootcamp

 

For the first two weeks of school we will be discovering routines and refreshing skills on tools (glue, pencils, markers, and etc.).  This is a great foundation to help the kindergarteners get ready for the rest of the school year and to build confidence in their learning.

We will start diving into our curriculum after Labor Day.

Walk A Thon T-shirt Order Form

On September 23 - Holland Christian  Y5-5th Grade classes will be participating in our annual Walk A Thon to help raise funds for our schools.  Please use the QR Code below to order your child's Walk A Thon t-shirt.  This will be given out to your student the day of the event.

Classroom Volunteer Opportunities

There are a few opportunities for you to walk beside our classroom this year.  Here is a list of the ones that are ongoing through out the year:

Literacy Volunteers: Tues/Thur mornings 8:15-8:45 AM

Lunch Volunteers:  Friday afternoons 11:40-12:15 PM

Classroom Party Volunteers: plan and run class parties, time and days will vary - but will be communicated early.

We will have a few field trips through out the year in which I will need parent volunteers.  I will communicate these opportunities in my weekly emails when volunteers are needed.

If you are interested in volunteering in any way Holland Christian requires that you fill out a simple ichat form to be cleared to volunteer.  Below is a QR code for you to scan and fill out.

Classroom Volunteers

Batons

 

Baton

If your child was given a baton at the end of last school year from their Holland Christian teacher - will you please bring this along with you to the Open House. I will have a basket available for you to return them.  If you are new to Holland Christian, you do not need to worry about this as your child will be receiving their baton at the end of Kindergarten.

Lunch Choices

Every morning when your Kindergartener comes into class they will need to make their lunch choice first thing.  They will each have their own card and will have to either:

1. Keep it on the counter if they are taking a home lunch.
2. Put their card in either Choice 1 or Choice 2 if they are taking a school lunch. (All school lunches come with a milk)
3. Put their card in Milk only (this is for if they are having home lunch but need to order just milk).

I will be walking beside the kinders the first few days to help them learn this routine, but it would be great if you can help make a plan with your student so they know what lunch they are having.

The school lunch menu can be found on one of tabs on the top of the blog.
